Yes, I agree that what the West thinks is not going to figure highly in military calculus. But indirectly it’s important. Decades of military rule destroyed the economy and led to the military being hated by the population. The country’s international isolation and crippling sanctions are viewed as contributing to that. At a time when the country is trying to recover from COVID economic crisis and is focussing on foreign investment as a way out of that, the military would be blamed for (potentially) destroying the country again. I really don’t think they want that. But, they are very stubborn and so is the other side, and it’s a bit unclear who will blink first.
