The big problem with any sort of joint tenancy/ multi unit or any sort of complex is the overheads.
There are usually three or more levels above you who all want a profit
Then if there is a high number of rentals in the block they will need refurbishing every three years or so and you have to share their costs
So in full agreement buy a house, in many cases they will not be that much dearer
