Good question. It looks like they would usually have their own entity. Looking at RAC, Merchant appear as their distinct entity. Even individual shareholders also often use separate entities for their super fund, or as a separate investment vehicle. There is one other "nominee" account from a large French bank which is similar to that aspect to our new entrant.
But I wonder... maybe this could point out to an overseas investor? Say they can't have a CHESS account and don't want to (or can't) register a local entity, so they let their broker trade and hold the shares in trust. Only speculation.
