Freeing the stuck drill has several nuances not alluded to in the posts. The incident happened as they were changing the drilling mud composition from underbalanced to over balanced. This meant that they were adding more high density components so that the mud would counteract the pressure underground. The drilling was being done using a mud turbine in the bottom hole assembly.
There are several possibilities to free the stuck drill stem.
One possibility to free the stem is to drive it from the top using the 4000m drill stem to rotate the stuck area.
A second possibility is to go back to the less dense mud an allow the bottom pressure to move the material sticking the stem.
The lesson for the future may be to change the mud composition before reaching the first fracture zone and possibly case it to this point. As suggested in several posts this is at the cutting edge of current experience. It is therefore a minor glitch which is part of the learning curve that will stand the company in good stead for the future.
