I heard that too (regarding burglars getting through roof by taking tiles off).

In general, I am happy with the tiled roof. My place is 5 years old, and I cannot complain about it being too hot as we have plenty of insulation under tile roof. Whirlybirds seem to help too. My parents place has a tin roof with insulation and it gets probably just as hot.

When we were building we had a choice between colorbond and tiles - price was about the same, we went for tiles as the house style seemed to match better. The entire street is full of new houses and very few have colorbond roofs. Plus the issue with under roof access as discussed. In 5 years, had quite a few occassion when access was required.

Having said that, if we ever build again everything will be looked at again. Just had a look at Barrington recommended by Bedrock - it does look really nice. Probably quite expensive.

    Cheers
