We use to use roofing ladders and another ladder running from the ground ladder across the roof up to the ridge, we used it to haul the buckets of mud up to the apex, you don't need it if you use 10l mud buckets but if you use 20l buckets it is very handy.

Yes Ive done a lot of repair work on tiled roofs after hail in Qld, given it was many years ago but still the same thing I think.
Ive seen tiled roofs where the hail has broken the tile and smashed a hole clean through then following hail has gone through the ceiling and into the house. Even if the windows get broken the steel roofs are much better at protecting from hail. Ive also seen horses with very deep cuts on them from hail. That is Qld when we use to get very serious hail damage and millions of dollars in damage to cars use to occur. You don't see it like that much any more.
Tiles are better at insulation on the roof but tin is much better at surviving hail and other dangers.
You also get a lot of broken water bars on tiles from untrained people getting up on the roof.

    Tin for me any day.
