"He feels threatened because he assumes the US is aggressive"
It seems to be a reasonable assumption considering that US/NATO has been at war non stop for 30 years and expanded east to be putting weaponry and exercising directly on Russia's borders. Russia is not imperialist it is not expansionary it has enough resources to mine for a thousand years, , , it wants buffers between it and western militaries, for good reason.
