As for what is known about our oceans?

There is very little that we know about these systems with very little in the way of research that can give accurate data to suggest if the speeds are higher, lower or within the range of normal.

The speed of the Leeuwin Current was estimated to be a constant 2kts south to north up until about 10 years ago and this was used as a part of the scientific consensus of this system.
A researcher working on her PhD put the time in and discovered that there where massive eddy’s/whirlpools that formed at various times through the year and rendered the previous respected fact obsolete.

Scientists have to go with what they know, obviously but they should also try and avoid overstating what they think into what they know.

It effects the credibility of their trade, when they overstate their assumptions.
