Indeed Westport is not the most lively place in the world. I'm not entirely sure about the air pollution side of things tho. I'm assuming it was a wet day when you were in Westport if you noticed the odd smell in the air haha.
Karamea is an amazing place indeed. You would have driven thru my home town of ngakawau on your way!
If the area had a bit more cash for investments there would be many great eco tourisim opportunities provided they were managed properly. But the cash and foot traffic must also present.
