Pete,
Europe being willing to rely on Russia for hydrocarbons was just one example of how global supply chains reflected reduced levels of supply security during the globalisation era. Unfortunately, the world doesn't ever seem to play that nicely for long. If nothing else, freedom and communism are mutually incompatible. Maybe freedom and our current facsimile of democracy are incompatible as well. Deglobalised supply chains and trade are more inefficient and expensive, exacerbating supply-side driven inflation. I'm doubtful that these ill effects are temporary, but I'd rather put up with them than return to the alarming levels of naivete of the past.
I agree that we have a way to go technologically before it will be sustainable to be sustainable, energy-wise. We seem to be in the process of learning that.
I probably should stop barging in on the chartists' home ground for a bit. Shutting up...now.
