The elephant in the room

Unfortunately, Novonix for all its great technology happens to be making one of the dirtiest components within a Lithium Ion battery- Synthetic Graphite. Synthetic graphite while being the best form of graphite for high quality batteries, also happens to be derived from fossil fuel refining and it is an expensive product to produce. As battery production ramps up globally, authorities will look more closely at the supply chain and carbon intensive processes will come under close scrutiny.

We know from comments that Elon Musk has made that Tesla is working hard to increase the proportion of Silicon in their Graphite/Silicon anodes and they would be 100% Silicon if they could. The whole battery world would replace graphite with silicon in a nano second if they could figure out to stop the Silicon from degrading.

Before getting carried away on the hype train it is worth remaining sober about the enormous changes happening within battery technology and Novonix's place in it.

Perhaps on battery day Tesla will announce a graphite free anode, which would be a revolution in cost and a huge boost to the environmental credentials of the battery manufacturing industry.
