I think the most relevant point for explorer stocks is that even the best geologists never get it right all the time. Some big finds have been overlooked by the best.
As mentioned above, sound company, strategic planning etc etc is probably the best thing to look for.
Regional geology certainly helps (and you don't need to be a rock licker to look into that sort of thing).
