When I travelled around Morocco I did visit the most eastern fort in northern Africa & it was suggested that Rome was trying to unify the tribes of north Africa & get them to do Rome's bidding because to have a try with Roman soldiers would have been unaffordable. As you say THEY gave Rome the middle finger with INTEREST!!!
