The first phrase contains the word 'was' the form it takes 'en' this word is not anchored in time it points to existence before the present without reference to a point in history. The word “beginning” (archei) can be placed as far back as possible and then push it back some more because it has no point of origin. The Logos or Word did not come into existence at “the beginning,” for the logos antedates that beginning.
