Australia notches 10 months of tourist growth

The Australian tourism industry has chalked up its 10th consecutive monthly rise in international visitors.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics preliminary arrivals figures released today recorded a 56,100 or 18 per cent jump in visitors in June compared to the same month last year.

Since the end of the SARS crisis, arrivals into Australia have climbed dramatically and in the last six months more than 300,000 extra people people have arrived in Australia, an increase of 14.6 per cent on 2003.

Of Australia's major markets in June, Japan was up 55 per cent while north-east asia jumped 45 per cent.

New Zealand rose 31 per cent, Britain was up two per cent and the United States rose five per cent.

The only region which dropped in June was south-east asia which declined by four per cent.
