I think you hit the nail on the head...."they just don't know"...we'd be collectively better off by ensuring the youngies get a decent education, and providing them (or even better, surrounding them) with the right role models so that they can stick at it.
I'm all against the 'Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day' welfare bullsh*t, and all for the 'Teach him how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime', alternative which is surely infinitely better. The child's early environment especially needs to be straightened out.....I'm sure we can improve here.
