Mate, you don't need to convince me of the ineptitude of governments or politicians, here or abroad. The most salient point is the constant denial of China that the situation was out of control, and the misinformation they were feeding the WHO. Only on Jan 20 did they admit possible human to human transmission.
If the govt had banned the export of medical supplies in early Feb it would have been too late as they were already purchased and in transit. However, I don't for the life of me understand the legality of citizens buying and exporting in bulk.
However, it seems we both agree on the warnings being unheeded for many years and certainly that if more goods were made here, they could be more readily available in times of emergency.
I really hope that this covid-19 pandemic brings to the fore the folly of globalisation and the need to be somewhat self efficient, resurrecting some manner of manufacture in Australia.
We are going to need alot of taxpayers to foot this $150bn bill.
