The Three Gorges Energy has announced the 200MW/1000MWh Vanadium flow battery energy storage project in Jimusaer, Xinjiang, China is now open for bidding for the overall design and construction. The scope of the project includes but is not limited to, survey and design work, equipment procurement, construction, equipment supervision, grid commissioning, grid-connected tests, and related procedures until the overall completion and acceptance.

    How much Vanadium for 1MWh?
One megawatt-hour (1MWh) of stored energy equals approximately 68,000 litres of vanadium electrolyte or 9.89 tonnes of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), which can include a proportion of vanadium (III) oxide (V2O3) depending on whether a chemical or electrical method of production is used

So this single project is 1,000 x 9.89T - Rounding up 10,000 Tonnes of V2O5.

This is where demand will come from as VRFBs are selected for Long Duration Energy Storage.

    2,800MWh
The Eraring battery could grow to 700MW and up to four hours of storage (2,800MWh) depending on the evolution of the market

    42,000MWh
The document reveals the full extent of the project's enormity, specifically a 17-20 GW solar farm tied to 36-42 GWh of battery energy storage,

Japan's Itochu to invest in battery farms for renewable energy

    Just a few select examples.

Japan has a couple of extra data points which I find interesting -
They have 84GW of installed Solar PV (China 430GW, USA 141GW, India 68GW, Germany 69GW)
Comment : Timeshifting electricity availability generated from from PV requires batteries - you can work out roughly what PV generation hours look like from this website which has the data of solar insolation all over the world.
    https://pvwatts.nrel.gov/
For Example Tokyo averages out at 4.47kWh/m2 per day - not an exact translation but I take this to be a good 4.5 hours of generating at name plate capacity per day - ie 1GW of installed solar will generate 4.5GWh of electricity per day.
This is not my wheelhouse so actual calculations would take into more data points than this, but it is useful to compare how good the solar resource is by location.
ie Elliott NT is at 6.65kWh/m2 or almost 50% more generation than Tokyo for the same sized solar PV farm.

Itochu is planning to build up to 20 large-scale storage batteries with a capacity of 1 GWh, to help support a growing share of wind and solar in Japan by 2030. It’s forecasting this could become a 100 billion yen business.
