Not necessarily. Unlike yourself, I didn't assume they meant official regulatory trial when they said "trialling".

I was thinking more like, "Hey, that person over there has just got Covid, let's try sticking this up his nose and see what happens".

I mean, it is legal to supply and use (at least in some countries), so no need to get regulator approval to supply it to patients under a clinical trial, so there is nothing stopping them gathering data in how well it performs in certain conditions (e.g. decreasing viral load).

With it already being legal to supply and use, they can essentially conduct research that they would previously have done in a petrie dish on live human beings (within reason).

If they like the results they are seeing they could launch a proper trial. Or maybe their aim is just use the results to support advertising material.
