There was a proposal to have one Australia Day but to split it in two. The early part of the day would acknowledge aborigines as being here first. Concomitant with that is the smoking ceremonies and other totems of aboriginal life. After midday the whites get to hold their celebrations like BBQs and ferry races on the harbor (Sydney mob) with the events of the day ending with a fireworks display. It was hoped that the two events would meld the black and the white.
