One problem that the Liberal party have is with metropolitan voters which made up their heartland.
Some in their party have been engaging in culture wars with them thus alienating them.
Those voters are looking for alternatives to support.
Candidates like Teal (nee Liberal) and Independents (ex Liberal) can appeal to them if the candidates are well funded and of quality.
Some say that the Liberals have moved away from them.
Also the reduction in primary vote for the two majors is something that will require new tactical thinking.
On the other hand it's not been unusual for the losing party to spend time in the wilderness for a while until the cycle is repeated.
Time will tell if that will continue with the average Australian voter getting older.
As an aside with the Vic election some commentators suggested that the Libs had upset the Asian voters with their recent rhetoric.
Maybe the Vic Libs need a new leader with a profile. Someone like Frydenberg perhaps.
