Why 6 Months?

We're not far from a lockdown situation. It's 2 weeks for asymptomatic carriers to infect their housemates, 2 weeks for them to symptomise, then 3 weeks of low rates of new infections before any reopening can commence. Clearly any reopening will be staggered over several weeks, so a timetable of about 3 months for the shutdown is understandable. The government is running its narrative on the basis of a 6 month shutdown. I've never heard them articulate where that figure comes from. On one hand they're saying words like "lockdown" should not be used because they cause anxiety, then they're running a timeline that must be causing anxiety by telling people they'll be unable to socialise for 6 months. Does the timeline have any basis to it other than a political purpose of being one that they should comfortably beat?
