Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I am just going to say that I believe the share price and liquidity of the shares is a reflection of the current economic conditions. The entire oil and gas industry has faced massive downgrades in share price, I cannot see how EGO would be immune if we didn't have consolidation.

Ill-timed (in hindsight), yes because consolidation happened during the time the entire market decided to tank and hence giving angry share holders an excuse for blaming consolidation instead of the market.
