it's because fear is more powerful than greed, as seen by the shape of most equity charts, up by the stairs, down by the elevator.
This means that a small minority of shorters can then spread fearful negative rumours or engage in price manipulation to bring the price down and cause fear, which is a low act. most people don't like those who engage in low acts, not all however. To a lesser extent the same goes for ramping, but has much less of an effect on the price due to abovementioned fear/greed comparison.
